Viewing and Searching Logs

Learn how to search, filter, and analyze your logs in the VedaTrace dashboard.

The Logs page is where you spend most of your time - viewing, searching, and analyzing your application logs.

Log Stream

The main logs view shows a real-time stream of your logs:

Log Levels

Each log entry has a severity level:

LevelDescriptionColor
debugDetailed information for debuggingGray
infoGeneral informational messagesBlue
warnWarning messagesYellow
errorError messagesRed
fatalCritical errors causing application crashDark Red

Filtering Logs

By Time Range

Filter logs by selecting a time range from the dropdown:

  • Today - Logs from today
  • Last 7 days - Logs from the past week
  • Last 30 days - Logs from the past month

By Service

If your application has multiple services, filter by service name:

  • auth - Authentication service
  • payments - Payment processing
  • api - API endpoints

By Log Level

Click on the log level badges to filter by specific levels. You can combine multiple levels.

Searching Logs

Use the search bar to find specific log entries:

  • Full-text search - Search for any text in log messages
  • Case-insensitive - Searches are not case-sensitive

Log Details

Click on any log entry to see its full details:

The detail panel shows:

  • Timestamp - When the log was generated
  • Level - The severity level
  • Full Message - Complete log message including stack traces
  • Metadata - Additional context like environment, region, user ID

Metadata Fields

Logs can include structured metadata:

  • service - The service or component that generated the log
  • environment - Deployment environment (production, staging)
  • region - Geographic region
  • version - Application version
  • Custom fields you define

Best Practices

  1. Use consistent log levels - reserve fatal for truly critical errors
  2. Include relevant metadata - service name, environment, user context
  3. Write descriptive log messages - make them searchable and meaningful
  4. Use the search feature - find specific errors or patterns quickly
